Current App Situation
The current Sephora app is functional but outdated, with a basic black-and-white design that feels monotonous and lacks modern, dynamic features. It fails to reflect Sephora's bold, fun, and expressive brand identity, resulting in a less engaging and uninspiring user experience.

User Interface & Experience (UI/UX) – Design Critique

The design of the Sephora app feels outdated and uninspired, especially for a global beauty brand known for boldness and trendsetting. While it sticks to the black-and-white color scheme that reflects Sephora’s identity, the app itself doesn’t communicate the Sephora vibe—it lacks the edge, glam, and excitement you’d expect from a leading beauty retailer.Buttons and layouts feel generic and old-fashioned.

 

They’re static, boxy, and not visually pleasing—more like a utility app than a beauty experience.There’s little to no animation or movement, making the browsing experience feel flat and transactional.No visual storytelling or playful elements that reflect the fun, creativity, and luxury of makeup culture.

 

Overall, it feels like a basic e-commerce app rather than a beauty destination. There’s nothing that makes it exciting or emotionally engaging.For a brand like Sephora, the app should be bold, beautiful, and immersive, with sleek design, motion, and a feeling of discovery. Instead, it feels safe, outdated, and disconnected from the in-store experience or the brand’s powerful image.

Creative Solutions to Improve the Sephora App

  1. Modern Redesign
    Introduce a fresh, bold visual identity with dynamic layouts, sleek buttons, and brand-driven aesthetics that reflect Sephora’s edgy vibe.

  2. Add Motion & Micro-Interactions
    Use subtle animations and transitions to make the app feel alive and immersive.

    Incorporate fun elements like beauty quizzes, streak rewards, and spin-the-wheel offers to make it engaging.

  4. Showcase Community & UGC
    Highlight user-generated content, reviews with photos, and social looks to build trust and excitement.

  5. Make Shopping Fun
    Transform product discovery into an experience with mood-based filters, curated edits, and swipeable style boards.
